MAGNETIC COMMAND PEDESTAL
![]() |
The Technical Systems Associates TSSAP Series Model 10184 Magnetic Command Pedestal is a servo driven single-axis antenna pedestal suitable for shipboard or severe coastal environments. This pedestal system is configured to operate in the G-Band frequency range. However, the microwave transmission line is replaceable so that this unit may be configured to operate in virtually any frequency. An assortment of horn or dish antennas are available. The Model 10184 Magnetic Command Pedestal consists of a single-axis rate controlled pedestal coupled with a digital compass assembly. The pedestal is a single-axis antenna pedestal equipped with a pulse width modulated servo drive system and power supply. An integrated slip ring/rotary joint package provides the means of RF signal routing. An external control switch allows simplified control of the system modes. The Model 10184 Magnetic Command Pedestal operates in three modes: magnetic command, slew, and external error signal input. |
In the magnetic command mode, the servo loop is closed around a servo compass providing error signals as a function of deviation of the azimuth axis from a manually set azimuth magnetic bearing. The servo compass is located on the driven azimuth shaft and rotates with the shaft. It is coupled to the stationary pedestal base through an internal slip ring assembly contained within the azimuth shaft. The slip ring is integrated with the RF rotary joint. This allows continuous rotation of the azimuth shaft. The magnetic compass will maintain proper bearing for base rotation up to the slew rate of 5 RPM. The compass may be adjusted while the pedestal is running.
In the slew mode, there are three sub-modes of operation. These are a fixed rate CCW, a fixed rate CW, and a manually set bi-directional slew. Selecting CCW slews the azimuth axis at 5 RPM counter clockwise. Likewise, selecting CW slews the azimuth axis at 5 RPM counter clockwise. Likewise, selecting CW slews the azimuth axis at 5 RPM clockwise. These are both internally adjustable over the full slew range.
The manual slew mode is controlled by a 10 turn precision dial potentiometer located on the side of the azimuth housing. This allows the operator to continuously vary slew from zero to full slew in either direction.
The EXT mode accepts a bi-polar DC error signal on the input connector and drives the pedestal proportionally to that signal.
